Andong Jjimdak

Mention jjimdak, or braised chicken and one of the most popular franchises come to mind – Andong Jjimdak. There are various speculations on the origin of the dish but the most common assumption is that the dish originated from the village of Andong during the Joseon period. Andong jjimdak is a chicken dish cooked over high heat, resulting in less fat and a richer taste. The broth is made with ingredients such as garlic, onions, ginger, green chili pepper, soy sauce, shiitake, carrots, potatoes and other vegetables. It is often served in huge portions, with the chicken meat covering a layer of cellophane noodles. For about less than 20,000KRW, you get quite a big plate of the chicken dish good enough for 2. You can order a bowl of rice to go along with the dish as well.

There are 3 main types of the dish served here, with or without bones and the seafood with chicken version. They are all reasonably priced at less than 30,000KRW for the normal serving.
It is not at all difficult to find the chain in Seoul, as there are plenty of Andong jjimdak franchises all around. Go to Myeongdong and you will find not one or two but almost one in every food alley that you turn into. You can also easily find it in most of the shopping hotspots such as Hongdae, Sinchon or Gangnam. Recently, a franchise has opened in Raffles City, but nothing beats trying the original dish here in Korea!

The dish itself. Notice the pile of cellophane noodles at the bottom.

One of the many Andong Jjimdak franchises in Korea.
We have tried many Korean foods and Andong Jjimdak remains one of our all-time favourites. The tender juicy chicken bits cooked with the flavourful thick sauce is enough to make anyone’s mouth water! The dish goes well with a bowl of white rice and some kimchi. Highly recommended dish!
