Sangsu-dong Café Street (Yri Café)

a popular place for musicians and writers

Extending from the nearby popular café joints at Hongdae and Hapjeong, the Sangsu-dong Café Street provides visitors a quieter neighbourhood to enjoy their cup of coffee. If Hongdae is dominated by club culture and Hapjeong restaurants, then the first thing that comes to most Koreans’ minds when they think of Sangsu is probably the massive Seoul Gas Thermal Power Station (formerly the Dangin-ri Power Station), a fixture of Seoul’s cityscape for the past 81 years. Trendy cafes and cultural spaces have gradually increased in quantity over the past few years, which clubs have also spilled over from Hongdae.

A café here at Sangsu-dong Café Street particularly stands out. As one of the bigger and more land-back spots to hang out in the area, Yri Café has become a popular place for musicians and writers. Once you enter the café, you will notice that an extensive record and book collection lines the walls of the café. Together with wooden seating and art decorations on the wall, they give this place a quaint and mellow atmosphere.

At its book reading corner, you can find plenty of books related to art, film and photography etc. on the bookshelf. There are seats available for the book readers such as the ones shown in the picture above.

Besides the standard coffee menu, Yri Café also serves specialties such as Pumpkin Latte (6,000KRW) and Sweet Potato Latte (6,000KRW), which we really loved!

How to get to Yri Café:

At Exit 4 of Sangsu Station on Line 6, turn left upon exiting. You should see the following shops after turning left.

Walk along the path all the way for about 100m until you spot a GS25 convenience store like this.

Once you spot the GS25 convenience store, go past it and turn right. Sangsu-dong Café Street begins from this point onwards.
